Book Launch: Sensing Injustice: A Lawyer’s Life in the Battle for Change

November 18, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Michael Tigar‘s legacy as a movement lawyer goes back more than 50 years. At 28, he won the Supreme Court case that resulted in thousands of Vietnam War resisters being freed from prison. Over the years he represented a host of progressive movement activists and intellectuals, including Angela Davis, leaders of the Black Panther Party, the Chicago Eight and many more. Tigar also played a key role in the legal team investigating and winning a legal judgment against the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile, for the 1976 assassination in Washington DC of IPS colleagues Orlando Letelier, the exiled Chilean diplomat and opposition leader, and Ronni Moffitt, an IPS staffer. Tigar was also part of the legal team that worked to hold Pinochet accountable for torture and genocide.

His new book, SENSING INJUSTICE: A Lawyer’s Life in the Battle for Change, has just been published by Monthly Review Press.

Michael will be joined in conversation by Rep. Jamie Raskin, Democratic congressman from Maryland and a former professor of constitutional law, who led the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump, and has played key roles in the Congressional Progressive Caucus and beyond, defending democracy and the Constitution against continuing assaults.
