The Rising Latin American Left: México and Beyond

October 17, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Mexican journalist José Luis Granados Ceja on What Can Come Next

Something remarkable is happening south of the border. The corporate cliques that have totally dominated Mexican politics for decades have lost their stranglehold on Mexican presidential power and now stand on the cusp of losing — to a vibrant progressive party — their second consecutive national general election. Similar dynamics are unfolding elsewhere in Latin America.

Few analysts have a better or broader take on this remarkable progressive political surge than José Luis Granados Ceja, a veteran journalist born and currently based in México City. José has lived throughout the Americas, in nations ranging from Brazil and Canada to Ecuador and Venezuela. His articles on grassroots Latin American social change efforts have appeared in a wide variety of U.S. progressive publications, among them The Nation, Jacobin, and Yes! magazine.

José Luis has also been an active contributor to the México Solidarity Project, a binational effort working to counter the misinformation about the contemporary Mexican political scene that circulates regularly in mainstream U.S. media outlets. He’s currently completing a graduate degree in human rights and popular democracy at México City’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
