The experiences of and proposals around the Universal Basic Income have generated a lot of interest in recent years in different parts of the world. At this time of intense ecosocial crisis and a profound deterioration in the living conditions of so many people, UBI has become an attractive option for many. At the same time, there has been much criticism and controversy connected to the financing, the focus on the individual, and the role of the state in establishing the basic income projects.

In an attempt to explore the limitations and the potential of UBI, the Ecosocial Pact of the South and the Institute for Policy Studies invite you to this discussion forum. Four activists and intellectuals will discuss the basic income project as a point of departure–and potential building block–for the creation of ecosocial alternatives to the current cycle of poverty and neoliberalism.

What are the implications of the basic income and what is its role in meeting the challenge of adapting the economic system to planetary limits? What are the practical experiences of the basic income project in Stockton, California in the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED)? Perspectives on basic income from the Global South, and why basic income should be framed within a larger transformation, will drive this engaging conversation.
