Debunking Carbon Markets and the Neo-liberal “Green” Economy

August 26, 2011 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The Earth Democracy Conference builds on the “Declaration” adopted by the Ecojustice People’s Movement Assembly at the 2010 US Social Forum. As part of The Earth Democracy Conference that brings together people who are working on the frontlines of the ecojustice movement, IPS’ Daphne Wysham will be featured on this panel, Debunking Carbon Markets and the Neo-liberal “Green” Economy.

The neo-liberal/corporate agenda to co-opt the response to the climate crisis by using carbon markets to commodify nature and make vast profits and to co-opt the upcoming Rio + 20 Earth Summit by advancing a false green economy will be contrasted with a true green economy grounded in climate justice.

Speakers:

  • Daphne Wysham, IPS Fellow and Co-Director of IPS’ Sustainable Energy and Economy Network,
  • Rachel Smolker, Co-director of Biofuelwatch and an organizer with Energy Justice Network,
  • Ruth Caplan, author of GANE:General Agreement on a New Economy.

Daphne will also give a talk from 11:00am – 12:30pm in the workshop “Beyond Filthy Fuels and False Solutions: Peaceful Uprisings”
