In the 2001 Durban Conference, Black organizations demanded the recognition of slavery as a crime against humanity and reparations for this crime. Propelled by the conference, projects for reparations have been discussed in many countries. In Brazil, the scholar and activist Diva Moreira has defined reparations as the re-establishment of the nation under an anti-capitalist, anti-racist, and anti-patriarchal basis. Considering that slavery was essential to the constitution of capitalism, can we heal without overcoming this system? We invite you to an Afro-diasporic conversation about reparations! From organizing the resistance against the military dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985) to denouncing the killing of almost 60 thousand folks in Brazilian psychiatry hospitals, Diva Moreira dedicated her life to Black liberation. Currently, she is writing a book on reparations and mobilizing communities about the topic. Join us in this vital conversation about how reparations can reshape society!
