President Trump has continued to claim that the United States is working on a ceasefire in Gaza. The reality, Phyllis Bennis explains on Al Jazeera, is that “when Trump wants to stop this war, he has the power to do so” by ordering a halt to the arms transfers that enable the genocide to continue.

“Last year, the United States paid, of our tax money, 40 percent of Israel’s entire military budget for the year,” Phyllis reports. “This year already it’s up to $22 billion, while massive cuts” to programs like Medicaid and SNAP “are underway here at home.” For all the rhetoric about brokering negotiations, Phyllis says we should keep our focus on what the U.S. is doing on the ground.

“Only an arms embargo — an end to the U.S. arms — is certain to end this war,” she concludes. “That’s the only thing that actually could end it.”
