Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently announced plans to seize control of all of Gaza. On Al Jazeera English, Phyllis Bennis took issue with Israel’s proposed “reoccupation” of the territory, which she said deliberately shrouds the fact that Israel has long been an occupying power there.

“This talk about whether or not Israel is going to ‘reoccupy’ Gaza is a spurious argument: Gaza been under Israeli occupation since 1967,” she explains. “When [Israeli] troops were redeployed out of Gaza in 2005, it didn’t end the occupation — it simply changed the nature of the occupation: it took out the settlers and redeployed the troops from being in the streets of Gaza to surround Gaza.”

Phyllis says the language is a signal that Israel is going to escalate its assault against an already devasted and starving population. “So, what it means is we’re going to throw [Palestinians] out; we’re going to create concentration camps, which already exist, but they’re going to expanded,” she explains.
