VIDEO: “All the Talk About Ceasefire Means Nothing” As Long as Biden Keeps Sending Weapons to Israel

As Israel escalates its attacks on Lebanon and prepares a ground invasion of the country, IPS Middle East expert Phyllis Bennis joined Al Jazeera to talk about the role U.S. weapons are playing in the broader conflict. Although the United States has called for a ceasefire and expressed concerns about civilian casualties, Phyllis says the administration’s actions simply don’t match.

“The actions of President Biden are to continue sending weapons and money that enable the genocide in Gaza and the war that’s increasing in Lebanon,” Phyllis said, noting that U.S.-supplied weapons were reportedly used in Israel’s assassination of longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. “That’s the message that gets through to Netanyahu and the rest of the Israeli leadership.”

“All of the talk about ceasefire means nothing as long as they continue to send these weapons and now send troops,” she emphasized, noting the U.S. has over 40,000 troops stationed in the region.

“I do believe that the administration, including President Biden, would prefer not to see this war expanded, but they are not willing to stop providing all the weapons that Israel wants, including the most lethal forces in the U.S. arsenal,” Phyllis concluded. “They’re not willing to stop that — that’s the only way that the calls for a ceasefire can be real.”
