The Ukraine War crystalized a new and threatening era of “blockification”, and increasingly dangerous great power military, economic, and technological competition. Escalation of the Ukraine War, including weapons of mass destruction remains a possibility. There is a total absence of U.S.-Russian “strategic stability” arrangements.
President Biden’s National Security Policy and NATO’s new Strategic Concept names China as a “challenge” to the “rules-based order.” Taiwan has become the tenuous hinge of the U.S. empire, and provocative naval and air force “exercises” in the East and South China Sea could easily escalate to a U.S.-China nuclear war. China is playing a long game, while the West focuses on short-term military fixes. Add to this the new QUAD, the AUKUS Alliance, and Biden’s efforts to reassert U.S. Middle East hegemony.
