The View East: Ukraine, Poland, and the Left

June 1, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has altered the geopolitics of Europe. Ukrainian refugees have flooded into Poland and elsewhere in the region. Finland and Sweden are joining NATO. And the European left has divided into those standing in strong solidarity with Ukrainian resistance and those who have opposed supplying arms to Kyiv for fear of escalating the conflict. The Polish left is firmly in the first camp.

How is the war in Ukraine shaping the future of the European left? And what questions does this raise for the U.S. left?

Bartosz Rydlinski is a political scientist who teaches at Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw. He is also the co-founder of the Polish social democratic think tank Ignacy Daszynski Centre and has been a central figure in the Polish left.
