A powerful people’s movement nurtured and fueled with Thomas Sankara’s spirit and energy has been unfolding in Burkina Faso and is engulfing the continent of Africa and beyond. It ended the 27 year rule of President Blaise Compaore on October 31, 2014, defeated the coup d’etat attempt of General Gilbert Diendere in September 2015, and has been inspiring various grassroots movements in their quest for justice, freedom, and democracy in Africa and across the globe.
Burkina Faso just successfully organized credible and transparent legislative and presidential elections which ushered in the victory of the president-elect Roch Marc Christian Kabore. The opportunity is therefore right to discuss Thomas Sankara’s legacy and the potential opportunities for a participative democracy.
The conference will analyze the future of Thomas Sankara’s movement, Thomas Sankara’s legacy, values, and vision and the prospects of sustainable development in the new democratic Burkina Faso.
