Great Powers Competition in Africa and Beyond

August 17, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

At the end of 2018, the United States declared that it was involved in a “Great Power” competition in Africa, particularly against China and Russia. Such declarations and policies from the West often presage further instability and exploitation on the African continent. In addition to the US declaration, long-time French military expansion, economic exploitation and political intervention remains very much intact and has spread in certain regions. The U.S. and France are joined in the intensification of the scramble for Africa’s wealth by Germany, the U.K., Turkey, Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, Russia, China and a coterie of other global players.

On the birthday of the honorable Marcus Garvey, join us to discuss all this and the response from north to south and east to west of the continent of Africa, the legitimate desire to resist in the context of the revival of Pan-Africanism. This forum will seek connections with grassroots movements organizing against the various mechanisms of neo-colonialism such as the economic exploitation and the militarization of Africa, the oppression of the CFA Franc, and the international criminal court. Similarly, on the heels of the recently concluded Non-Align Meeting concluded in Venezuela, we will touch on Latin America and in the Caribbean, namely in Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, and Bolivia, where forces of resistance are at work against imperialism.

Speakers:

  • Maurice Carney, Friends of the Congo,
  • Heather Benno, Party for Socialism and Liberation,
  • Sean Blackmon, ANSWER Coalition,
  • Netfa Freeman, Black Alliance for Peace and Pan-African Community Action (PACA).

Panelists will discuss the implications of the renewed scramble for Africa and the response from social movements throughout the African continent and in Latin America and in the Caribbean.

Please RSVP.
