Film: The Calling – first screening

photo from filmA free monthly screening series, Community Cinema features films from the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens. In over 65 cities nationwide, screenings are followed by lively panel discussions that bring together citizens, organizations and public television stations to encourage dialogue and action around important and timely social issues. Community Cinema [DC] hosts screenings each month (from October to June) at Busboys and Poets and the Washington DC Jewish Community Center. IPS’s Social Action & Leadership School for Activsts (SALSA) has served as community partner with Community Cinema [DC] since 2005.

This month’s feature is The Calling by Danny Alpert, a behind-the-scenes look at young Americans – Christian, Jewish, and Muslim – preparing to become the nation’s next generation of religious leaders. The Calling follows their transformation from idealistic students into ordained religious professionals. This Calling explores the forces that are drawing a new generation of young people to serve their communities and their faith.

Screening will be followed by a Q&A with: Anas “Andy” Shallal, Iraqi American artist, activist, restaurateur and Evelyn Simpson-Curenton, composer, organist, vocalist and music director for the WPAS Men and Women of the Gospel.
