Film: The Draft and the Vietnam Generation

November 7, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Join IPS for an afternoon viewing and discussion  of The Draft and the Vietnam Generation, a 49-minute documentary, telling the inspiring stories of ordinary folks who faced the moral dilemma of being drafted to fight in a war they opposed. Their defiance not only changed their lives, but changed American politics forever.

The viewing will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Beth Sanders in conversation with IPS Fellow Phyllis Bennis. This timely lunch-time event comes amid questions that the Ken Burn’s PBS series on the same issue feeds the myth that peace activists were anti-soldiers.

Please RSVP.

The revolt against the Vietnam-era draft was an outstanding episode in the moral history of the United States. Beth Sanders’ documentary shows how the draft clouded the life of the country and accurately conveys a sense of how so many struggled to get out from under that cloud.”
Todd Gitlin, past president, Students for a Democratic Society; author, The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage; professor, Columbia University

The Draft and the Vietnam Generation tells the inspiring stories of those young men who, with courage and often at great personal risk, opposed the unpopular and immoral Vietnam war.”
Maurice Isserman, co-author of America Divided: The Civil War of the 1960s.

Resistance to the military draft to obtain soldiers for the war in Vietnam was widespread across this country, crossing class, religion, and race lines. “The Draft and the Vietnam Generation” makes this vivid, capturing the moral reasons taken against the war, and the power of individuals and then a movement to take a stand against shameful policies. At a moment when resistance again to state wrongs is on the rise, this film is a wonderful reminder of the bravery, costs, and necessities for such a stance.”
Susan M. Reverby, McLean Professor in the History of Ideas and Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, Wellesley College, Former draft resister organizer, Cornell University 1966-67
