May 1 is International Worker’s Day, and Ten Thousand Villages Alexandria is commemorating with a special shopping fundraiser from 5-7 pm, in which 15 percent of the evening’s sales will be donated to Break the Chain Campaign.
Break the Chain is an iniative at the Institute for Policy Studies that works to end the exploitation and abuse of migrant domestic workers in the DC area, especially those from Africa and South Asia.
“Without the living wage provided by Ten Thousand Villages many of our women artisans might very well be among the hundreds of thousands of women trafficked across international borders every year,” said store manager Kate McMahon. “It’s a serious issue that needs to be brought to light.”
