The Washington DC Independent Film Festival (DCIFF) is an award winning annual film festival showcasing independent films from around the world. This year’s DCIFF is from February 25th to March 1st.
In a first time partnership the Institute for Policy Studies is proud to partner with DCIFF in this years screening of The Other Barrio, a drama about a housing inspector Roberto Morales (Richard Montoya) as he investigates the suspicious circumstances of a fatal fire in a residential hotel in San Francisco’s Latino Mission District and finds himself face to face with corruption at City Hall and the mysterious Sofia Nido (Veronica Valencia), a beautiful flame from his past. This independent Neo-noir feature film, based on a story by San Francisco Poet Laureate Alejandro Murguia, uses San Francisco’s dramatic cityscape as a backdrop as it takes viewers deep into neighborhoods and communities seldom seen on film, while addressing issues around gentrification and displacement of low-income communities along the way.

This screening will be followed by a cutting edge panel discussion reflecting on the parallels of gentrification in DC and San Francisco, featuring Jennifer Bryant of ONE DC and Wes Rivers of DC Fiscal Policy Institute.
