DC Screening: Will The Real Terrorist Please Stand Up

April 6, 2011 @ 10:00 pm - April 7, 2011 @ 2:00 am

photo of Danny, Gerardo, and SaulFor half a century, small groups of Cuban exiles have waged a terrorist campaign against Cuba’s revolutionary government, with active or passive support from the U.S. government.

In the 1990s, Florida-based exiles began bombing tourist sites, the backbone of Cuba’s economy. An Italian tourist died in one of the bomb attacks. Since the FBI did not arrest the bombers in Miami, Havana sent agents there to infiltrate and report on the violent groups. Instead of stopping the perpetrators of terrorism, the FBI arrested five Cuban spies. They were tried in Miami and given draconian sentences despite a dramatic absence of evidence against them.

Will The Real Terrorist Please Stand Up documents this history involving the CIA, violence, and the 5 Cubans serving long sentences in U.S. prisons. The film features an interview with Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Cuban Five who is currently serving life imprisonment in Victorville Maximum Security Prison for “conspiracy to commit espionage.” Landau also interviews Luis Posada Carriles, Orlando Bosch, and others who have acknowledged perpetrating acts of terrorism in Cuba as “freedom fighters.” Delightful surprises are appearances in the film by Fidel Castro and Danny Glover.

Following each showing will be a discussion with the filmmaker Saul Landau.

Tickets are also available at the box office of West End Cinema, 2301 M Street NW.

This event is co-sponsored by the DC Metro Coalition to Free the Cuban Five, TransAfrica Forum, and we want to thank WPFW for being the media sponsor for this event.
