Brown Bag: Throwing Stones At The Moon

September 12, 2012 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Throwing Stones at the Moon: Narratives from Colombians Displaced by Violence was edited by Sibylla Brodzinsky and Max Schoening, with a foreword by Ingrid Betancourt. For nearly five decades Colombia has been embroiled in internal armed conflict among guerrilla groups, paramilitary militias, and the country’s own military. The oral histories in Throwing Stones at the Moon—from Colombians from all walks of life, including farmers, union leaders and former guerillas—describe the most widespread of Colombia’s human rights crises: forced displacement.

Join us for a brown bag discussion, as IPS Fellow and Drug Policy expert, Sanho Tree discusses with Sibylla Brodzinsky and Max Schoening the complexities and context of the conflict in Colombia.

Kirkus Reviews recently said of Throwing Stones: “Brodzinsky and Schoening have compiled a useful, moving set of oral histories. Death threats, forced planting of coca, bombings, maiming by mines, deliberate dismemberment, assassination of trade unionists and people seeking government redress and protection, and persecution of Colombian refugees who fled to Ecuador—these stories express a horrific experience and plea for humanitarian intervention. [An] extensive, poignant study.”

Books will be available for sale at the event.

Co-sponsors: IPS’ Drug Policy Project, Voices of Witness, and Teaching for Change bookstore.
