Author Event: Why Fund War?

March 14, 2010 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Maryland’s 7.4 percent unemployment rate is worse than it has been in a generation. The state’s unemployment trust fund is so depleted it will be insolvent within six months. Foreclosure claims are up 67 percent from 2008, 16,000 new claims in the last quarter alone.

In the midst of severe economic crisis, why are we still funding war?

All polls indicate the majority of Americans oppose the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. 95 service members from Maryland have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Taxpayers in Maryland will pay $17.6 billion for Iraq & Afghanistan wars since 2001.

What can we do about it in Howard County? Phyllis Bennis and Kevin Martin, executive director of Peace Action, will start the conversation. Bring your ideas for action to the discussion!

This event is sponsored by the Howard County Coalition for Peace and Justice. Contact Virginia Rodino, 202-465-0918 for more information.
