Author Event: 99 to 1

April 4, 2012 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

book coverFor the last thirty years, we’ve lived through a radical redistribution of wealth. All the money has moved upward to a tiny fraction of the population. It’s as though we’re undertaking a bizarre social experiment to see how much inequality a democratic society can tolerate.

As a result “We are the 99%,” the rallying cry of the Occupy movement, has spread far beyond its ranks. But who are the 99 percent? Who are the 1 percent? How extensive and systematic is inequality throughout society? What are its true causes and consequences? How is inequality changing our world? And what can be done about it?

Join IPS for this talk and book signing, featuring Director of IPS’ program on Inequality and the Common Good Chuck Collins, author of 99 to 1; How Wealth Inequality Is Wrecking the World and What We Can Do About It. Introducing Chuck and moderating the event will be Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

Co-sponsors: IPS’ Inequality and the Common Good and New Economy Working Group projects, Teaching for Change bookstore, Busboys & Poets, Faith & Money Network, Empower DC, Democracy Collaborative, United for A Fair Economy and, Center for Economic and Policy Research.
