AFRICOM Political Education Session

May 20, 2008 @ 9:30 pm - May 21, 2008 @ 12:00 am

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.
-Dwight D. Eisenhower

The AFRICOM mandate means that U.S.- Africa policy will be further driven by military engagement rather than diplomacy, development and genuine partnerships. The Bush Administration is mapping out an approach to Africa that is more focused on security and resources than the development of Africa’s economies, which will lead to further instability and insecurity throughout the continent.
