Eleven years ago, the United States Military invaded Iraq. On March 26, Iraqi human rights advocates and labor leaders will join US military veterans to testify to the lasting impact of the war and to make the case that the US government must be held to account for the serious damage it has caused.

Iraqi civil society leaders will explain the US role in sectarian violence as well as the ongoing health crisis caused by toxic munitions and burn pits used during the occupation. Their accounts will be supplemented by testimony from experts on environmental toxicology, international relations and international law including Dr. Mozhgan Savabiesfahani of the University of Michigan, PHD John Tirman of MIT and Senior Staff Attorney Pam Spees of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

U.S. military veterans will share their experiences with the impacts of environmental hazards, the destructive effects of multiple and concurrent deployments on their mental health, and the devastating betrayal of military sexual assault. They will also explain the stigma, stress, and bureaucracy they face when attempting to access care and support from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The People’s Hearing will be moderated by Phil Donahue, creator and host of The Phil Donahue Show and Co-Director and Co-Producer of the film Body of War.
