SUMMARY:What's Hidden Behind the Headlines of U.S. Charges Against Raúl Castro
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, May 20\, 2026\, before a cheering crowd of Cuban exile luminaries in Miami’s Freedom Tower\, acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the “historic” indictment of 94-year-old former Cuban president Raúl Castro on charges of ordering the murders of four American nationals 30 years ago. \nThe charges relate to a 1996 incident in which Castro\, then Cuba defense minister\, allegedly ordered Cuban MiGs to shoot down unarmed civilian aircraft operated by the Miami-based “humanitarian” organization\, Brothers to the Rescue\, in the Straits of Florida. \nA mountain of historical and political context is needed to properly understand the charges against Castro. The incident has ties to the case of the Cuban Five\, whose trial proceedings in 2000  forced José Basulto\, the founder of Brothers to the Rescue\, to admit that Brothers had been test-firing potential weapons that could have been used against Cuba. \nYou’re invited to this free screening of “Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up”\, which chronicles half a century of hostile U.S.-Cuba relations. The film\, by the late IPS Fellow and filmmaker Saul Landau\, tells the story of the case of The Cuban Five\, intelligence agents sent to penetrate Cuban exile terrorist groups in Miami and who almost served long prison sentences until a negotiated release in 2014. The film highlights decades of assassinations and sabotage at first backed by Washington\, then ignored by the very government that launched a “war against terrorism.” \nLandau landed interviews with the leading anti-Castro terrorists\, who recounted their deeds often with the blessing of the CIA as well as interviews with Cuban state security officials explaining why they sent the five agents to infiltrate the violent Miami exile groups. \nDiscussion Speakers: \n\nIsaac Saney is a Professor and Cuba and Black Studies Specialist in Black African Diaspora Studies and History\, Dalhousie University\, Halifax\, Canada. He is also a member of the executive of the Canadian Network On Cuba.\nCheryl LaBash was an organizer in the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 and has served many years as the co-Chair for the National Network on Cuba (NNOC)\nNetfa Freeman is IPS Events Coordinator and was an organizer in the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5\n\nThis event is in support of An International “No War on Cuba” Week of Action that is from June 28 to July 4\, organized by the National Network on Cuba (NNOC) and allied solidarity coalitions

SUMMARY:Forging a Democracy that Works for All
DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Policy Studies\, alongside The Nation and We Build Progress\, is hosting its third annual Henry A. Wallace Symposium. This symposium is a capstone event of IPS’s Henry A. Wallace Fellowship Program\, supported by the Wallace Global Fund. \nIn 1939\, as fascism was overtaking Europe and gaining ground at home\, then U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace charged that words alone would not secure democracy’s survival: \n“Democracy must apply itself to meeting the material need of people for work\, for income\, for goods\, for health\, for security\, and to meeting their spiritual need for dignity\, for knowledge\, for self-expression\, for adventure and for reverence…The danger that it will be overthrown in favor of some other system is in direct proportion to its failure to meet these needs. We may talk all we like about the beauties of democracy\, the ideals of democracy\, the rightness of democracy. In the long run\, democracy or any other system will be measured by its deeds\, not its words.” \nThe rise of far-right authoritarianism in the U.S. and across the globe today – fueled by deteriorating economic conditions\, militarized borders\, and a lack of hope for a better future – demonstrates the urgent need to not only defend democracy as an ideal but to expand its meaning for our everyday lives\, as Wallace presciently envisioned over eighty years ago.  \nAt this year’s Wallace Symposium\, we will hear from movement leaders fighting to protect hard-earned rights and frontline communities\, policy experts advancing a bold agenda to confront corporate power and create shared prosperity\, and elected officials working to renew our democratic institutions from within. Together\, we will explore the most urgent of challenges: how might we re-envision democracy to ensure its survival – and with it our thriving? \nJoin us on July 23 from 2:30 pm to 6:30 p.m. EDT at Eaton DC. This free event will be both in-person and live streamed. For in-person attendees\, the Symposium will be followed by an evening reception from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Jamie Raskin (MD)\nSulma Arias\, People’s Action\nKeya Chatterjee\, Free DC\nKate Hess Pace\, Hoosier Action\nAru Shiney-Ajay\, Sunrise\nShane Larson\, Communication Workers of America\nLindsay Owens\, Groundwork Collaborative\nErica Smiley\, Jobs With Justice\nSarah Anderson\, Institute for Policy Studies\nTope Folarin\, Institute for Policy Studies\nLindsay Koshgarian\, National Priorities Project\, Institute for Policy Studies\n\nFull schedule coming soon!
