2017 Annual Report

About

A Letter from our Director and Board Chair

Dear IPS Community,

For more than half a century, the Institute for Policy Studies has served as an anchor for progressive ideas and a home-base for dynamic social movements. Today, the powers of unchecked corporations and racist nationalism are striving to reverse centuries of progress toward fair labor practices, equitable economies, and a just society. We are proud to fight back, and to have you alongside us as we write, research, speak, network, and provide on-the-ground support for movements working to build a just social order. With your support, 2017 was a banner year when we made progressive change possible.

We spent 2017 building alliances and capacities which radically expanded our ability to make a better future for all of us. Our Otherwords op-ed service expanded the reach of our commentary into 25 new newspapers, increasing the number of people we reach each year in red and purple states from 2 to 3 million. Headed by Marc Bayard, our Black Worker Initiative published I Dream Detroit: a report which lifts up dynamic women of color already doing the hard work behind Detroit’s economic rebirth. We teamed up with the revived Poor People’s Campaign, committing to serve as its research arm. Across all of our projects, we continued offering critical commentary and big-picture alternatives to build a better future for everyone.

Internally, IPS expanded both its capacity and its perspective. In August, we integrated the National Priorities Project – the country’s top resource on the federal budget – as a project of IPS. Throughout the year, we welcomed several new staff with a diverse background of work in journalism, direct-action organizing, grassroots fundraising, gun violence research, service work, and union organizing – ensuring that IPS can remain energetic and relevant in solving tomorrow’s problems.

Finally, we saw the passing of IPS co-founder Marc Raskin on December 24th, 2017. Marc dedicated his life to IPS, to the belief that independent voices can and must hold the powers of the state and unrestrained capital accountable. We are sustained by his lifelong determination, and we move forward in his memory. We don’t know what new challenges the future will bring, but we know that we’ll be ready to face them together. Thank you – it is your support and your passion that let us carry on.

Onward,

John Cavanagh and Tope Folarin
IPS Director                 IPS Board Chair

IPS MISSION AND VISION

Our Mission: IPS is a progressive think tank dedicated to building a more equitable, ecologically sustainable and peaceful society. In partnership with dynamic social movements, we turn transformative policy ideas into action.

Our Vision: We believe everyone has a right to thrive on a planet where all communities are equitable, democratic, peaceful, and sustainable.

IPS aims to create just, meaningful social change through three key tools

  • Shaping and shifting the narratives through which people understand key issues like race, class, environmentalism, and justice across gender diversity.
  • Coordinating with social movements to build power and fight back against corporate and military opposition to change.
  • Cultivating transformative, proactive visions for a more peaceful, just future.

The world as it stands is dangerously mired in the systemic realities of racism, poverty, militarism, ecological devastation, and misogyny. IPS is building a better world. We are working toward:

  • Equity for people of all genders, races, income backgrounds, and abilities.
  • A world where the US and other powers pursue just peace for all.
  • A just transition away from exploitative systems, including but not limited to fossil fuels, which create ecological devastation and systematically disadvantage the poor and people of color.
  • Narrowing the divide of staggering economic inequality that so afflicts us in almost every aspect of our lives.
  • A future where the leaders and solutions of tomorrow are mentored and supported from impacted communities today.
  • Shifting social narratives to expose that poverty is a result of systemic oppressions, not personal failings.

LETELIER-MOFFIT 40TH ANNUAL HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD

Starting in 1976, IPS has hosted an annual human rights awards ceremony to honor the memory of our fallen colleagues Orlando Letelier and Ronni Karpen Moffitt. In their honor, we celebrate brave change makers who are making a positive impact on their local communities while championing human rights in the United States and across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Our 2017 awards ceremony celebrated two incredible organizations upholding human dignity for all: Opal Tometi and the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) and Javier Rojas Uriana and the Shipia Wayuu Association. The event was emceed by Tope Folarin, IPS Board Chair and novelist, and Noura Erakat, IPS Trustee and human rights attorney, who led the audience through an incredibly inspiring program that included remarks from Winona LaDuke, native leader and environmentalist, and Jamilah Lemieux, former senior editor of EBONY and VP of News and Men’s Programming for Interactive One. As a special treat, attendees heard from the local DMV band, Leftist, a group that draws inspiration from hip-hop, alternative, rock, and soul music.

In October, IPS partnered with the Chilean Embassy to produce the Sheridan Circle Memorial Service to remember Ronni and Orlando’s legacies. IPS’s Sarah Anderson emceed the service, and the program featured His Excellency Juan Gabriel Valdés, Ambassador of Chile to the United States, Francisco Letelier, artist, poet and son of Orlando Letelier, and Michael Tigar, human rights lawyer and counsel to the Letelier and Moffitt families and the families of other victims of the Pinochet regime. The wonderful mother-daughter music duo of Melinda St. Louis and Lila Benavente performed for all those gathered at Sheridan Circle. IPS was honored to be present with Ambassador Valdés and several of Ronni and Orlando’s family members and friends at the service.

OUR NEXT LEADERS

IPS is growing the next generation of leaders through our internship and fellowship programs. Each is designed to provide a combination of hands-on experience, training, mentoring, and networking.

Our flagship Next Leaders program is a ten-week paid internship and mentorship experience. This year our summer cohort was made up of 100% people of color, all of whom were women or gender nonconforming individuals. They produced a record amount of content: publishing nearly twenty articles, landing pieces and scoring interviews in US News and World Report, In These Times, the Huffington Post, and the Latino Media Collective. They also contributed to IPS reports, moderated and spoke on panels, and educated our staff through our first intern-led dialogue series. Finally, they helped conceptualize and launch the IPS Young Alumni Network, institutionalizing our commitment to serve as a resource for real change in the long term.

Highlights

Events and Programs

It’s because of you that in 2017 we’ve been able to launch new popular education event series, produce reports in support of growing intersectional movements, and expand our research in new areas. Your continued support has helped us put the interests of people and planet over profit.

SUSTAINING OUR WORK

For over half a century, the Institute for Policy Studies has relied on individual donors and private foundations to support our work. It is exactly this independence from corporate and government funding which allows us to speak truths to these powers: enabling us to provide key scholarly support to educate, connect, and empower critical social movements.

Make IPS a priority by giving today, as generously as you can. We cannot do this work without your support. The best way you can support our work in the long term is to become an IPS sustainer. Even a small monthly contribution of $20 or $30 gives us the dependable, grassroots support we need to turn ideas into action for peace, justice, and the environment.

The Institute for Policy Studies is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Your donation is fully tax-deductible.

To donate online, please visit the Institute’s donation page.

To donate by mail, please make checks payable to the Institute for Policy Studies. If you wish, you may designate a specific project on the check memo line. Please send your contribution to:

LEGACY OF MARCUS RASKIN

Marcus Raskin, co-founder of IPS, died of a heart attack on December 24th, 2017.

Marc was a brilliant intellect, lifelong activist, and a kind, caring human being. He touched all of our lives, not least by creating IPS — the first uncompromisingly progressive think tank of its kind. When he and Richard Barnet left the Kennedy administration in 1963 to start IPS, they were driven by an “extraordinary conceit” to speak truth to power.

The legacy that has since unfolded has been remarkable. Under Marc’s direction, IPS has played a central role in numerous progressive movements: civil rights, antiwar organizing, women’s rights, and protections for workers and the environment.

After leaving his role as IPS Co-Director, Marc continued to attend weekly staff meetings and events up until his death. He was thrilled to see the organization continue to thrive as a multi-issue, activist think tank that works with social movements to shift public discourse, promote game-changing policies, and mentor the next generations of progressive public scholars.

It is our honor to carry on the work of IPS in his name.

THE NEXT GENERATION LEGACY SOCIETY

Since our founding in 1963, the Institute for Policy Studies has played a key role in providing public scholarship to cutting-edge social movements in the U.S. and the world.

We don’t know what issues will emerge in the next decades and beyond, but we do know that tomorrow’s progressive movement-building groups will need the honest intellectual groundwork that IPS provides. IPS will always speak with an unwavering, independent voice: unburdened by party affiliations and steadfast in promoting equity, sustainability, peace, and democratic participation.

IPS is mentoring the next generation of public scholars, and we focus on selecting and mentoring individuals from low-income backgrounds and communities of color. Working closely with public scholars who helped build and inform the movements for social and economic equity, demilitarization and diplomacy, and environmental justice, they will become the next generation to build on the Institute’s legacy of inspiring progressive ideas into action.

By including IPS in their estate plans through a bequest or other planned gift, members of the Next Generation Legacy Society demonstrate a commitment to ensuring that IPS is able to build a future that is more inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and democratic.

IPS would like to express our deepest gratitude toward the extraordinary commitment, generosity, and thoughtfulness of the following Next Generation Legacy Society members:
